Yoga Styles

Hatha

Hatha yoga typically involves asanas and breath work. Asanas are held for a couple of breaths and then transition onto the next posture. In Sanskrit “Ha” represents sun while “tha” represents moon. Hatha yoga aims to balance the mind, body and emotions. Hatha yoga classes can be accessible for all abilities and typically begin with pranayama (breath work), move into asanas (poses) through clean transitions and end with a relaxing savasana.

Ashtanga

Ashtanga is a more dynamic style of yoga with a focus on connecting the breath (ujjayi breath) with the body and the gaze (drishti). Ashtanga classes begin with sun salutations and follow a specific sequence of asanas (poses). Traditionally this style of yoga is practised 6 days a week and can take 1.5 hours per session. This branch of yoga was only established in the 20th century and is seen as a modern style of yoga.
